In mid-April, a 23-year old posted on Twitter that he “felt like shooting up a school today.” Police were alerted to the tweet on May 7 and informed the superintendent of Yankton Schools all without being aware of the date of the original tweet.
Yankton Schools were put on a “partial” lockdown. Police officers were sent to every school, and the police were able to apprehend the suspect.
For the police, finding out the tweet was almost a month prior changed nothing, as they were “were going after public safety as our first priority.”
Yankton Schools are using this incident as an opportunity to review their safety plans.
