School safety is not just our problem

Moscow, Russia

In Moscow today, a student entered School No. 263 with a rifle, shot and killed two adults, and took a 10th Grade class hostage.  The boy used the rifle to threaten the security guard to gain entrance to the school.  The security guard then called for the police

When the police responded, one was shot and killed.  A teacher was also killed.  Russia media reported that there were no child casualties.

This tragic incident illustrates that school shootings are not just an American-type incident.  Wherever there are children gathered to be taught, there are opportunities for those who would do them harm.  As educators, we need to do all we can to minimize the threats to these innocents.
